DCAM DIGITAL|Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum × SenseTime: When Millennia-Old Civilization Knocks on the Door of AI
The Digital Center of the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum (DCAM) is dedicated to the digital research and innovative transformation of Dunhuang art, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to deeply explore and revitalize cultural heritage. By partnering with cultural institutions, universities, and technology teams, DCAM advances China’s digital preservation of cultural relics through initiatives like the Dunhuang Digital Restoration Project and Digital Art Creation, leveraging technology to document Dunhuang’s past, present, and future. This builds a comprehensive chain from academic research to public engagement, inspiring broader awareness and guardianship of Dunhuang culture.
Building on this vision, DCAM is honored to announce a strategic digital partnership with SenseTime, harnessing the “SenseNova” large-scale AI model system to compose a technological ode to cultural heritage preservation.
Empowered by the SenseNova model, DCAM and SenseTime are co-developing forward-looking cultural tourism solutions, progressively constructing a “perceptible, interactive, and inheritable” digital cultural ecosystem. From exhibition interpretation to IP revitalization and smart campus operations, AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) and AR (Augmented Reality) technologies are infusing Dunhuang culture with sustained digital momentum.
During exhibitions, visitors can interact in real time with the AI model via photos, voice, or text to access exhibit descriptions and extended narratives. Multimodal interaction acts as a personalized guide, intelligently identifying interests and tailoring tour routes to transform passive viewing into deeper understanding.
Using AR technology, grotto murals and archival patterns transcend time and space. Based on SenseTime’s Spatial Intelligence SaaS Platform, large-scale spaces and small artifacts can be reconstructed by AI and dynamically integrated into navigation, immersive landscapes, and interactive experiences, expanding aesthetic engagement while reimagining cultural tourism consumption scenarios.
Centered on Dunhuang’s cultural IPs, the GuoDong Video Creation Platform offers one-stop tools supporting diverse artistic styles and content formats—short films, GIFs, special effects, and emojis. Classic motifs like Feitian (celestial beings) and Nine-Colored Deer are animated through AIGC, revitalizing Dunhuang aesthetics in hybrid virtual-physical spaces and pushing the boundaries of contemporary expression.
Looking ahead, we aim to further unlock the potential of digital technologies in exhibition storytelling and cultural creation, ensuring Dunhuang culture thrives through dynamic evolution and global dialogue.
In this context, DCAM has launched the “Ancient & Modern Dual Feitian · AIGC Innovation Design Competition”.
Themed “Epic in the Sands,” “Treasures of Dunhuang,” and “Cosmic Exploration,” the competition features awards including the Feitian Award, Best Creativity Award, Best Student Work Award, and Experimental Exploration Award. Full award details will be announced progressively. All winning and shortlisted works will be showcased at the “Ancient & Modern Dual Feitian · AIGC Innovation Design Competition” exhibition during the 2025 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season.
